The Department of Mechanical Engineering / Chair of Materials Science at the University of Innsbruck is recruiting four excellent full-time PhD students to conduct research in the field of materials and process development for beam-based additive manufacturing. The employment will start between March and October 2023 and will last three to four years, depending on the type of funding and position.

Founded in 1669 with several Nobel Prize winners, the University of Innsbruck is now a place of study, research and employment for more than 31,000 people. The city of Innsbruck, which has twice hosted the Winter Olympics, is located in the beautiful surroundings of the Tyrolean Alps. The combination of the alpine surroundings and the urban life in this historically grown city offers a high quality of life.

Background

As a PhD student at the Chair of Materials Science, you can expect a varied and exciting research topic in a young and dynamic environment. The research group deals with material and process development for beam-based additive manufacturing with a focus on laser powder bed fusion. On the materials side, research is currently focused on molybdenum, tungsten, titanium and aluminum alloys. The research is carried out in collaborative projects with industrial companies and research institutions. Therefore, in addition to research and dissemination, the transfer of research results into an industrial production environment is a major goal of the Chair’s activities

Your main tasks:

  • Independent theoretical and practical research in material and process development for beam-based additive manufacturing
  • Participation in industrial research projects
  • Dissemination of research results and writing of a doctoral thesis

Your profile:

  • Master’s or Diploma degree in materials science, physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, mechatronics or comparable studies
  • Ability to work independently
  • Teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills

Are you interested? Then please send your application documents (letter of motivation, CV, copy of BSc and MSc degrees) or any questions you may have to ms-jobs-mechatronik@uibk.ac.at. We look forward to hearing from you!
