Dear Colleagues,
We are happy to announce a new opening for one experimental PhD position where we are looking for highly-motivated candidates to join our team at Donostia/San Sebastian. We would be very grateful if you could forward this information also to other potentially interested students.
Thanks a lot, Manfred Mark and Francesca Ferlaino.
PhD position at Donostia/San Sebastian in Quantum Simulation and Computation with Ultracold Atoms in Tweezers
We are launching a new ultracold atom experiment utilizing dysprosium atoms in programmable optical tweezer arrays. This state-of-the-art platform will incorporate a quantum gas microscope and other cutting-edge technologies.
The project aims to advance the frontiers of neutral-atom quantum architectures by exploring the use of novel atomic species, such as dysprosium, which offer promising avenues for expanding operational schemes in quantum simulation and computation. Core equipment is already in place, and the experimental design and feasibility studies have been successfully completed.
This initiative is part of a strong collaboration between DIPC (Spain) and the University of Innsbruck (Austria), fostering a dynamic exchange of expertise. As the experiment is still in its formative stage, you will have the rare opportunity to shape its development, contribute original ideas, and acquire hands-on experience across the full experimental stack—from laser cooling and trapping to high-resolution imaging and Rydberg excitation.
How to apply
Interested candidates should submit an updated CV, transcript of the exams, a brief statement of interest to the application, and the name of at least one referee. Reference letters are welcome but not indispensable.
The reference of the specific opening to which the candidate is applying should be stated in the subject line, and the application must be received before the application deadline.
Although candidates are welcome to contact the project supervisors to know further details about the proposed research activity, please be aware that the application will be evaluated only if it is submitted directly to the email address listed below as application email.
• Reference: 2025/20
• Application deadline: 2025/06/12
